SENIOR ELECTROPOLISH AND ELECTROPLATING ENGINEER

 

High Temperature Superconductors, Inc. (HiTS) develops and manufactures high temperature superconductive wire and complementary products. HiTS is based in Santa Barbara, California.

HiTS is searching for a Senior Electropolish and Electroplating Engineer to oversee all electropolishing and electroplating activities. You will be responsible for all wet processing steps in superconducting wire production, including ultrasonic cleaning, electropolishing and electroplating. You will take these processes through the development stage to production as well as overseeing production. The ideal candidate will have prior hands-on experience with electropolishing and plating, a solid understanding of the required chemistry and will be able to drive equipment design, process development and optimization. Prior wet lab experience, safe chemical handling practices and hazardous waste training is required.

Senior Electropolish and Electroplating Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Develop, optimize and maintain electropolishing process for continuous processing of Hastelloy tape substrates
  • Improve design of existing electropolishing bench
  • Develop, optimize and maintain Cu electroplating process for continuous plating on superconductor tape substrates
  • Design and improve electroplating bench
  • Maintain and improve ultrasonic cleaning
  • Take all processes to production
  • Develop metrology methods for process control
  • Define and establish SPC protocols
  • Develop and document standard operating procedures and work instructions
  • Train technicians and operators
  • Communicate workplace safety precautions to employees and ensure safe work practices

Requirements:

  • Proven hands-on experience with electropolishing and/or electroplating equipment and processes
  • Experience in wet chemistry and hazardous material handling
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent analytical/critical thinking
  • Ability to work with little direction in a fast-paced dynamic start up environment
  • Knowledge of statistical process control (SPC, Six Sigma, DOE) is desired
  • Knowledge of Beckoff or Labview for process control is a plus

PROCESS/SENIOR PROCESS ENGINEER

HiTS is searching for a Process/Senior Process Engineer to oversee various vacuum deposition processes used in the production of high temperature superconducting wires. The ideal candidate will have prior hands-on experience with vacuum deposition equipment and processes such as e-beam, thin film epitaxy, magnetron sputtering and/or pulsed laser deposition. You will be part of a team bringing new equipment online and drive initial process development and optimization. You will take the process to production, train technicians/operators and develop SPC process control. Familiarity with clean room protocol is desired. This could be an entry or senior level position depending on experience.

MECHANICAL DESIGN ENGINEER

HiTS is searching for an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to design and build components and systems for material handling, thin film deposition, metrology, and more. You will be responsible for mechanical design, control systems, documentation, and hand-off to process engineering.

Mechanical Design Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Design and optimize mechanical and electromechanical components and machines, including selection of appropriate components and materials.
  • Evaluate mechanical and electromechanical systems by applying principles of mechanics, thermodynamics, hydraulics, heat transfer, and materials science.
  • Analyze mechanical systems using Finite Element Analysis (structural, fatigue, thermal, vibration).
  • Implement machine control systems including application of suitable PLC, motion controller, sensors and actuators, safety systems.
  • Maintain a focus on safety in every step from design through to production, mitigating mechanical, electrical, and chemical hazards.
  • Help refine manufacturing processes by designing and modifying equipment.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with team members and suppliers.

Requirements:

  • Ability to generate high level concepts, and to translate them into practical designs that meet the specified requirements.

FACILITIES MANAGER

HTS is searching for an experienced Facilities Manager to oversee all building-related activities. You will be responsible for preserving the good condition of infrastructure and ensure that facilities are functional, capable, dependable, regulatory compliant, and safe. The ideal candidate will be well-organized and able to optimize the use of space, utilities, and equipment while reducing operating costs. Facilities Manager responsibilities include:

  • Plan and coordinate all installations (HVAC, electricity, ultra-pure water, clean dry air, process chilled water, HazMat handling etc.) and system refurbishments
  • Manage the upkeep of equipment and supplies to meet health and safety standards
  • Inspect buildings’ structures to determine the need for repairs or renovations
  • Review utilities consumption and strive to minimize costs
  • Supervise all facilities staff (custodians, technicians, groundskeepers etc.) and external contractors
  • Control activities like parking space allocation, waste disposal, building security etc.
  • Allocate office space according to needs
  • Handle insurance plans and service contracts

  • Practical experience troubleshooting and repairing closed loop refrigeration systems for HVAC and Process Chilled Water is a plus.
